Version-Aware Word Documents

A research project sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

What are Version-Aware Word Documents?

The goal of version-aware Word documents is to facilitate:

Why yet another solution?

Our solution plugs in to the commonality of Word and provides a more complete system:

Revision history

What a document revision contains

Creating revisions

  1. An author makes some changes to the document
  2. The author commits the changes
  3. A snapshot of the current document data is saved to the revision history

Merging two documents

Visualizing document history

About the add-in

Revision history is stored in XML and includes revision relations and the location where content changes are stored inside the file

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<revision-history xmlns=""
    <revision id="e37bbc3f-e056-4259-a081-5ae7f2c8153e"
    <revision id="24f50581-38ba-46ae-839d-14d8b8f4e0f4"
        <parent id="e37bbc3f-e056-4259-a081-5ae7f2c8153e" />
